Berwyn Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedic Fabi Amezcua shows off her engagement ring at the Illinois Army National Guard's Recruiting and Retention Battalion's annual awards banquet on Nov. 16 in Peoria. Amezcua is engaged to the Illinois Army National Guard's Recruiting and Retention "Noncommissioned Officer of the Year" Staff Sgt. Francisco Orozco. The two met when they were both combat medics in the Illinois Army National Guard's North Riverside-based 708th Medical Company and were both working at a COVID-19 testing site in Peoria for five months in 2021. Orozco, a recruiter in Schaumburg, lost more than 60 pounds and had a neck tattoo removed to join the Illinois Army National Guard. He not only found 100 percent free tuition at any state college or university but also found love. The Illinois Army National Guard's recruiting cadre celebrated their successes, shared information, and enjoyed a night of comradery.
