Admiral Joseph Paul Reason was the first Black officer to become a four-star admiral in the United States Navy. Reason was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated with the Class of 1965. In 1976, he was assigned to the White House as the naval aide to President Jimmy Carter. After a tour as executive officer of USS Mississippi (CGN 40), Commander Reason took command of USS Coontz (DDG-40) in September of 1981, followed by command of the nuclear-powered cruiser as a captain of the USS Bainbridge (CGN 25). In 1986, he was promoted to rear-admiral and began a series of flag-assignments, including command of Cruiser-Destroyer Group One and Naval Surface Force, Atlantic, as well as a Pentagon tour in Plans and Policy. His capstone assignment was as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. (Artwork by Willie C. P. Kendrick III)
