As part of the Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2016, the experiment, held from July 26 to Aug. 5, tested Company K, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Company Landing Team’s ability to operate in an enemy-controlled area with limited resources and capabilities while utilizing future tactics, techniques, and procedures. The goal was to explore the extent to which smaller units require various assets to remain mission-effective.
Ensign Witherspoon, now a Captain in the U.S. Air National Guard at the 163d Attack Wing on March Air Reserve Base in California, served as an advisor and subject matter expert. He leveraged MQ-9B Reaper technology to enhance operational capabilities and provided insight into integrating real-time intelligence into tactical decision-making and mission planning.
