JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (April 16, 2025) – Commanding Officer Capt. Michael Tiller, Medical Corps, Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal to Cmdr. Kenneth Fan, Dental Corps, deputy director for Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine, during an All Hands meeting held at the Military and Family Readiness Center. Fan, of San Francisco, Calif., led a team of 21 personnel, while managing $4.5 million in annual research funding and the acquisition of two multi-year funding awards from the Dental Congressional Special Interest Program. Additionally, his expertise in orofacial pain extended beyond the command, providing valuable contributions to postgraduate dental training programs for the Army, Navy and Air Force. NAMRU San Antonio is one of eight research commands within Navy Medicine Research and Development. Its mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
