Army Staff Sgt. Devin Southerland, a 16-year-old youth, is receiving medical treatment for cancer in Winston-Salem, has always dreamed of becoming an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician in the military. Thanks to Stevens and Riley, both North Carolina National Guard soldiers, and many others joined together to make Devin Sutherland a ‘Soldier for the Day’. Due to the effects of his fight against cancer, Southerland’s heart was left very weak. Because of this, he will never be able to pursue his intent on joining the military. "It was overwhelming, I never imagined anything like this when I was in the hospital," said Sutherland.
