    Provincial Reconstruction Team Kandahar

CAMP NATHAN SMITH, Afghanistan – On Dec. 30, 2012, U.S. Army Pfc. Anthony Germain was selected as December’s Emissary of the Month in support of Operation Enduring Freedom by the senior enlisted members of the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team here.

Germain was chosen for his leadership, volunteerism, and completion of the Army Structured Self Development Level One module during a platoon competition. Hailing from Fort Bliss, Texas, and assigned to C Company, 4-17 Infantry, 1st Brigade, 1st Armor Division, Germain has been in the Army about two years and is currently deployed as a member of KPRT’s security force.

“The goal of the competition was to have 100 percent of our guys complete in Level 1 of Structured Self Development,” said Sgt. 1st Class Ricardo Solis, C Company, 4-17 Infantry platoon sergeant, “and we did just that.”

Early in December, Germain completed all 34 SSD Level I modules just four days after the start of the competition, earning him the recognition of International Security Assistance Force Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas R. Capel and time off of guard duty.

This web-based training is an early stepping stone in Germain’s education in the Non-commissioned Officer Education System.
KPRT is comprised of military members from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development and other government and non-governmental organizations. Germain and his platoon provide security for the PRT during its mission in supporting the transition from ISAF to Afghan control.

A native of North Lauderdale, Fla., Germain volunteers his time and effort by making sure peers find the right resources and makes it a point to help others. His goals include going to barber school, raising a family, and becoming a pastor. He and his wife, Erika, are expecting a child in May.
