Story by Staff Sgt. Carlos Davis

    2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division

SOUTH KOREA - The 210th Fires Brigade, Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army non-commissioned officer of the quarter was Sgt. Oh Young-ho, who is originally from Daegu, South Korea, and the senior KATUSA assigned to 580th Forward Support Company, 1st Battalion, 38th Field Artillery Regiment.

To become the KATUSA non-commissioned officer of the quarter, he prepared for the board for three months.

“I rehearsed the board with other NCOs in the company. We studied together for the board,” said Oh.

He also added that the board was a valuable experience among things that he can experience as KATUSA.

“During preparation and the board itself, I was proud of being KATUSA," said Oh. “I hope other KATUSAs participate in this board, have good results, and feel the same proud that I’m feeling right now.”

Oh was born in Jan. 15, 1991. He likes music, so he enjoys his free time playing piano, guitar, and jembe.

“Jembe is not a popular musical instrument, but when I saw street theater playing jembe, I thought it is an interesting instrument,” said Oh. “After that, I played jembe in my spare time; He also likes exercise, especially basketball.”

When he was young, he didn’t like studying, but he started to study hard with meeting a mentor.

“My father was a teacher, and I met one of his students,” said Oh. “He became my mentor, and we visited Seoul together, and visited some universities. From then, I became motivated and started to study hard. Through his untiring effort, he got into Seoul National University.”

Before joining the Army, he studied agricultural economics and rural development in university for a year. During his spare time, he played keyboards in his band at Hongik University.

“I also organized the acoustic band in my university and performed several times.” said Oh.

Oh joined the Army on May 2011. A big difference that occurred to him after joining the Army was that his health improved.

“I made an athletic club called ‘Spark’ in the company. I worked out steadily with other soldiers. That helped my health get improved.”

He remembers WLC as a meaningful experience.

“It was a good chance to learn about Army leadership,” said Ho. “I tried hard not to fall behind because of that I had good results. I felt really proud of myself both as KATUSA and Korean.”

After his military service, he is planning to go back to the university, study hard and perform as a band.

“Even though I organized a band before the Army, I didn’t have much time to play in the band because I had to join the Army,” said Oh. “So, when I go back to university, I will join that band again and provide acoustic performance in university."

When he finishes his study in university, he wants to work in an
    investment bank, especially Wall Street.

“In the Army, I have met a variety of people,” said Oh. “I learned how to communicate and hang out with different people. This will help when I go back to the university and when I get my job, because I learned how to get along with many people.”
