CAMP WALKER, South Korea - The 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command held the 18th closing ceremony for the Korean American Friendship Circle at the Evergreen Community Center, Jan. 11, to recognize and celebrate their accomplishments over the past semester.

Established in 2004, the KAFC is an exchange program for the purpose of building relationships and sharing cultures between American and Korean sponsors and college students from the Daegu area.

This semester hosted 15 groups made up of 85 students and 62 sponsors.

The ceremony began with opening remarks from Dr. Kim Bum-dae, Korean president of the KAFC, and Col. Roger R. Dansereau, 19th ESC chief of staff.

“The goal of the Korean American Friendship Circle is to allow participants of both nations to gain a better understanding of each other through a program of social and intercultural based activities,” Dansereau said. “I sincerely thank you for all of your time and effort you have put into the program this semester.”

Next, guests watched a slide presentation of photos from moments students and sponsors shared throughout the semester. The slideshow displayed what various U.S. and Korean activities the different teams experienced.

“The KAFC program is a wonderful blessing for all the Soldiers involved. We get to spend a lot of time with our Korean partners and learned about their culture,” said Lt. Col. Rajesh Lobrecht, 19th ESC G-1 adjutant and U.S. sponsor. “At the same time, it was a great opportunity to show our Korean partners how the Americans do certain things, and I am very proud to be part of this program.”

“It was a great chance to meet nice people and to understand other cultures through the KAFC,” said Yi Mi-young, Daegu University student. “I made a lot of precious memories by participating in special activities that I will never forget, with my sponsors and team members.”

Students who greatly contributed to the friendship circle were presented certificates, recognizing their participation in the KAFC.

“The KAFC has been recognized by many for its excellence in promoting friendship and understanding between our two nations,” Dansereau said. “For the Korean students of the 18th Friendship Circle, you are the future leaders of Korea, and I wish you all the best of luck in the future.”

Although the closing ceremony marked the official closing of the semester’s activities, many sponsors and students plan to continue their relationship.

“Even though people that I met came from different places, I never felt that we were different,” Yi said. “I will never forget the time I shared with them.”
