    Defense Contract Management Agency

DENVER - John Borrego, Defense Contract Management Agency Lockheed Martin Denver lead software engineer, was recently recognized with the Silver Snoopy Award.

The Silver Snoopy. one of NASA’s Space Flight Awareness awards, recognizes and motivates employees involved in human spaceflight missions. To qualify, an employee must make significant contributions to flight safety and mission success within human spaceflight programs. Known as “the astronauts’ personal award,” the Silver Snoopy is a prestigious recognition of non-managerial employees.

The contract management office celebrated Borrego’s accomplishment at an All Hands meeting where astronaut Jack Fischer, a Denver-area native, personally presented the award, along with a special pin. The pins are special because every Silver Snoopy pin has previously flown on a NASA space mission.

Borrego is the lead software engineer on DCMA LMD’s Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle Program Support Team. He established the first ever Government Mandatory Inspection Points on Orion MPCV’s ground and flight software, which significantly improved the system quality, reliability and safety of the program. To accomplish this, he worked with NASA and contractor personnel to develop the entire process, from identifying the new GMIPs to creating an appropriate strategy for execution.

In addition to his work on the GMIP process, Borrego established a multi-functional working group to structure Orion MPCV surveillance at supplier locations across the country. This group identified flight and safety critical component sub-systems and built a comprehensive documentation and reporting plan to verify vital inspection activities.

Finally, NASA program managers designated Borrego to develop a framework for performing software quality assurance on MPCV. The Johnson Space Center Program Office adopted this framework, which supports key points in the development of MPCV flight software.

“We’re extremely proud of Mr. Borrego’s conscientious efforts to improve flight safety,” said Ken Hall, DCMA LMD deputy director. “The Silver Snoopy is a wonderful way to recognize him for his hard work."
