WASHINGTON - Sgt. Timothy A. Spreder, a native of Florence, Kentucky and the 35th Color Sergeant of the Marine Corps, will carry the presidential colors during the 57th presidential inauguration January 21.

Spreder will carry out these duties while standing on the platform at the U.S. Capitol while President Obama takes the oath of office for a second term.

“I’m not nervous at all about standing on the platform during the inauguration,” said Spreder. “In fact, I’m truly honored to be a part of this ripple in American history.”

Aside from carrying the presidential colors, Spreder’s duties also include overseeing the maintenance and appearance of the colors being carried by other Color Guard Marines from the Barracks.

Spreder, 26, has held his current position as Color Sergeant of the Marine Corps since Jan. 6, 2012.

Spreder’s awards include a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two Meritorious Unit Commendations, two Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Marines from the “Oldest Post of the Corps,” Marine Barracks Washington, D.C. will provide extensive ceremonial support to the inauguration. The ceremonial marching companies from the Barracks, Company A and Company B, will march in the inaugural, and the “President’s Own” United States Marine Band will perform at the Capitol.

Military support to the presidential inaugural is part of a grand military tradition, dating back to 1789.
