SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Col. Gregory Thingvold took command of the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade during a change of command ceremony at the Army Aviation Support Facility, Jan. 7.
The ceremony, attended by the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division commander, Maj. Gen. David Elicerio, was held to transfer command from outgoing commander, Col. Michael Huddleston, to incoming commander Col. Gregory Thingvold.
“Mike has raised readiness standards across the entire brigade,” Elicerio said. “He did this the old fashioned way – hard work and personal attention.”
Huddleston, commissioned a second lieutenant in the Military Intelligence Branch in 1983, transitioned to the Minnesota National Guard in 1993. During his tenure, he held numerous positions, including battalion and brigade level training officer, brigade executive officer, director of army aviation and both battalion and brigade command positions.
“Being the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade commander has been a very rewarding and humbling experience,” Huddleston said. “[My wife] Nancy and I want to welcome your new commander, Col. Greg Thingvold, and his wife, Sara, back to the aviation community. Col. Thingvold is not new to the CAB and, in fact, has had several leadership positions, a deployment and tough assignments - all to prepare him for this command.”
Thingvold entered military service in 1983 and earned his commission in 1987. Since becoming a helicopter pilot in 1989, Thingvold flew the UH-1 Huey, AH-1 Cobra and the UH-60 Black Hawk. His previous posts included director of personnel for Joint Force Headquarters and command of several battalions.
“Today is a day to celebrate the leadership team of Col. Mike Huddleston along with his wife and Brigade Family Readiness Support leader, Nancy,” Thingvold said. “Thank you both for your dedicated service to this great organization and passing on to me and Sara a solid organization. I am honored to be your next brigade commander. Thank you Gen. Elicerio for this opportunity, and I can simply say, ‘Sara and I are ready.’”
