Carter Hall gets underway for unit training

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) got underway to participate in Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), Jan. 28, as part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group led by Amphibious Squadron Four.

COMPTUEX is an intermediate level ready group exercise held prior to scheduled deployments.

COMPTUEX is normally conducted during a three-week period to test the capability of ships within a ready group. The group is put through a series of drills that include small boat attacks, man overboard drills, firefighting exercises, ship-to-shore movements and various tactical exercises.

“COMPTUEX is a graduation exercise that will test the ship’s ability to handle real world threat scenarios,” said Cmdr. Greg Blyden, commanding officer of Carter Hall. “This exercise prepares us for missions that we are being deployed for, and grades the ships based on our response to whatever threat we may face.”

Carter Hall is one of three ships attached to the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group (KSG ARG). An ARG works together to create a fully functional fighting team and is tested to demonstrate deployment readiness.

“The ships are being graded on myriad war fighting missions and how well the ship performs in the face of an adversary,” said Lt. j.g. Korey Pack, Electronics Material Officer. “COMPTUEX is going to be very stressful and extremely tasking, but it is extremely important that we go through this certification so that we can identify our shortfalls with equipment and manning, and correct those things before we actually deploy.”

“There is only one acceptable result and that is passing,” said Blyden.
The KSG ARG COMPUTEX is being conducted off the East Coast of the United States in preparation for a scheduled deployment this spring.
