HOUSTON – Navy Recruiting District Houston Sailors judged a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps drill competition Jan. 26, at Dekaney High School in Houston.
The sailors judged cadets, from 26 Houston-area schools, competing in events such as personnel inspection, armed regulation, armed exhibition, unarmed regulation, unarmed exhibition and male, female and joint color guard.
The event also provided a chance for NRD Houston sailors to mentor, offer advice and encourage the young cadets.
“This drill meet was an excellent opportunity for us (sailors) to give back to the schools in our area,” said Navy Counselor 1st Class Daniel Butler, a judge at the event. “For many of these cadets, their future is in the military. While we judge, we can share our personal experiences with the cadets and answer any questions about military service they may have.”
The lessons learned by the cadets will help them in the future said Butler.
“These cadets sacrifice their time to the JROTC program,” he said. “The training they go through and the lessons they learn will greatly benefit them in whatever they choose to do after high school.”
The skills the cadets demonstrated impressed some of the sailors.
“What I saw out here is really impressive,” said Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Robert Walton, a judge at the event. “These cadets were on point; their execution of these drills is nearly flawless. You can see the dedication they all have in perfecting their craft. This has been a really rewarding experience to see the commitment all of these cadets have shown out here today.”
