ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Naval Support Activity (NSA) Annapolis held a groundbreaking ceremony to commence the expansion of its Commissary and Navy Exchange (NEX), Feb. 1.
“It is a great team gathering here because for the last 10 years this team has been working together to make this event happen,” said NSA Annapolis Commanding Officer Capt. Lang Reese. “It’s come together for this event today, where we have the chance to break ground and then on Monday we are going to immediately start construction.”
Those in attendance during the ceremony included the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy Vice Adm. Michael H. Miller, NEX Service Command Chief Executive Officer Robert Bianchi, Defense Commissary Agency Zone Manager Mary Williams and a host of managers and store employees.
“This is a tremendous contribution to the installation,” said Williams. “This installation, being that we have the Naval Academy here, deserves a beautiful, brand new facility with the space for military personnel and retirees and it will just be a great added benefit to the military.”
The new commissary will increase in size from 25,800 square feet to approximately 51, 500 square feet and the size of the NEX will increase from 37,200 square feet to approximately 98,500. It will include added amenities such as outdoor garden area, barber and beauty shop, food court and jewelry store. According to Reese, once construction is completed, sailors and their families will have a facility where many needs can be met within one location.
“What I am excited about is that we will have a large parking facility, and it will have a truly one stop shop. With the Navy Exchange, the Commissary and then in about a year from now we will be breaking ground and building our Medical Health Clinic,” said Reese. “So as our customers, the sailors' families, the retired and the committee members come in, they will literally be able to do everything in the one brand new facility.”
KBE Building Corporation of Farmington, Conn., was selected in August 2012 as the general contractor for the $27.2 million project, which is required to be LEED Silver certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.
“This will be an interesting project from an environmental standpoint; we will have a LEED Silver designation when it’s done. It is designed and constructed in such a way to comply with those requirements,” said Senior Vice President of Operations Erick Brown for KBE Construction. “Quality will be a stringent requirement with regular inspections throughout so that when we are done here, this building will stand here for decades and it’s something that we all can be very proud of.”
The commissary and NEX will be located on Kinkaid Road just outside of the installation and is tentatively scheduled to be completed in 2014.
