JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. – U.S. Air Force members of the 79th Medical Wing from Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility in Md., conducted a mass casualty training exercise depicting different injuries and levels of trauma, Jan. 10, 2013, at the Malcom Grow Medical Center.
“In a situation like this, if you had a mass casualty,” said Master Sgt. Erica Jasper, 79th Medical Wing. “What would you want to be thinking about when that patient walked in? What questions would you ask them? Because those are things that you would need to know so that you know how to treat them. So you know what equipment you might need.”
The mass casualty exercise conducted is in preparation of the 57th Presidential Inauguration, scheduled for Jan. 21, 2013, a historic event that occurs every four years.
“To be out there, to be so close to be part of history is very flattering and very honoring,” said Jasper.
But with any event there are always challenges to face.
“Every inauguration is slightly different,” said Maj. Jennifer LaVerne, chief of medical readiness. “That’s the challenge. Just to hear that it’s the 57th Presidential Inauguration, that’s part of history and it’s not something that just being in the military a lot of people can say. For this inauguration it’s different significantly in that each service has an area that they are responsible for,” said LaVerne, a Guam native. “I really am honored to even have this responsibility and it’s one of those experiences that I’ll certainly have to put in my tool box.”
