KABUL, Afghanistan – Coalition and Afghan forces conducted an operation to capture a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device cell operating in the Bati Kot area of Nangarhar Province early April 29.

During the operation, coalition forces received small arms fire from several militants as they attempted to enter the compound. Coalition forces returned fire, killing four militants. An adult woman and a teenager were also killed in the crossfire between militants and coalition forces. A young child and a teenage female were wounded during the firefight and are being treated at a coalition medical facility.

An adult female relative of the small child accompanied the forces to the medical treatment facility to attend to the girl.

Coalition forces received credible evidence indicating the cell was planning to conduct three SVBIED attacks against coalition forces in the area within the next few weeks. In the past, Bati Kot drew attention from an SVBIED attack on a convoy that resulted in multiple civilians wounded.

Coalition forces found multiple AK-47s, shotguns, chest racks with ammunition and IED construction material. An adult male from the compound was detained for questioning.

"We are saddened at the loss of civilian life," said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, Combined Joint Task Force-82 spokesman. "It is extremely unfortunate that militants put others' lives in danger by hiding among their families."
