ALBEMARLE, N.C. – B Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), headquartered here, hosted five members of the Moldovan Special Operations Battalion as part of the North Carolina National Guard’s State Partnership Program, Feb. 7 to 10.
“One of the key things we’re doing with the Moldovans is getting to know them,” said Army Maj. John Larch, B Co., 1/20 SFG commander. “Part of the SPP is to build camaraderie between Moldova and NC.”
During this partnership-building event, a key proponent was to familiarize the Moldovans with the NCNG special operations unit and their training practices. The training consisted of an airborne operation, a medical refresher course and a wind tunnel training exercise.
“I brought my airborne guys here to get familiar with [the NCNG’s] airborne techniques,” said Lt. Col. Radu Burduja, Moldovan Special Operations Battalion commander. “We are trying to get as much information as possible to take back to our army and share what we have learned about the U.S. military.”
This event will reestablish the relationship between the two units by setting the conditions for successful execution of future missions to Moldova under the SPP in the coming year.
“We’re able to share procedures we use and types of training that we do; and that goes in both directions,” added Larch. “When my soldiers go to Moldova, they’ll get a similar experience that [the Moldovans] get here.”
The SPP has many benefits, including building relationships with the other states and countries around the world that otherwise would not exist.
“This is an opportunity for my guys to learn as much as possible from such a big and developed army; especially when we talk about Special Forces and the specific training and operations,” stated Burduja.
Larch said “our hope is that in the future we will be able to deploy together somewhere, so we want to know how each unit works.”
