QUANTICO, Va. - More than 75 Children participated in the Open Rec Fridays event at the Quantico Youth Center on Purvis Road on Friday.
Youth programs, such as Open Rec Fridays, were established to provide scheduled activities and events that are responsive to physical, social, emotional and cultural needs of the youth on base.
Open Rec Fridays have become a popular event at the center with nearly 100 children participating every Friday. Open Rec Fridays are themed events that bring children from ages 6-18 aboard the base together in fun and educational activities.
Every week at the Youth Center, children have the choice of various activities in art, science and even math. There is also a game room, auditorium and computer room. There are different clubs apart of the Youth Center’s activities that include a family fitness challenge, book club, jewelry making and broadcasting.
The programs cater to the children when it comes to encouragement, education, peer motivation, nutrition and inspiration. The programs also instill a sense of belonging, usefulness, influence and competence by providing the young people with one-on-one relationships with fun, age-appropriate, well-rounded programming.
“This place is as enjoyable for the staff as it is for the children,” said Colleen Fahland, program assistant, Youth Center. “It’s a time for the kids to be kids without the stress of homework and chores. In addition to the kids having fun, their parents will also to have time to themselves.”
For the safety of the children, before they can participate in the Youth Centers various activities, their parents have to register them. To in enroll a child in Open Rec Fridays, or other events at the center, call 703-784-2249 or visit quantico.usmc-mccs.org.
