FARAH PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Local village elders attended a shura held by the Farah provincial government, Feb. 23, in Khak-e-Sayfed district.
The shura marked the transition of security from coalition forces to the Afghan National Security Forces.
"This is an important milestone for the district," said a team member with Special Operations Task Force West. "The ANSF has done a tremendous job, and with the continuing support of the provincial and national government, they will continue to provide security to the people of the district."
During the shura, the provincial governor of Farah, Dr. Mohammed Akram Khpalwak, answered questions from village elders and told the crowd it is time for Afghans to stand up and take control of their area.
"The time on depending on the foreign forces has ended," Khpalwak told the elders. "We now have to come together to ensure our security. We must stop the fighting between us for we have bigger, more dangerous enemies. We must not allow the Taliban to control our lives through their fear tactics. To do that, we must work together."
As coalition forces prepare to withdrawal combat troops from Afghanistan, the ANSF have taken the lead in providing security in the region.
