SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – Lt. Col. Thomas J. Verell, Jr. assumed command of the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion from Lt. Col. David S. Cannon during a ceremony March 1 at 8:30 a.m. at Patton Park
During the ceremony Verell, who was most recently the Deputy Current Operations for Information Management, Eighth Army, Yonsan, Korea, said he was proud to be the commander of such a “fine” organization.
“I am honored to be the newest member of Third Army and of the Headquarters Headquarters Battalion,” said Verell.
The mission of the HBBN is to provide unit-level support to the U.S. Army Central Headquarters and administer command and control to company and detachment-sized units attached to Third Army Headquarters in Kuwait and the United States. This support comes in several different forms and includes administrative and logistical support.
Lt. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, Third Army/ARCENT commander, welcomed Verell into the Third Army family and said he was confident the new HBBN leader would be a great commander.
“Tom is a combat engineer with a distinguished record of service in the U.S. and abroad including overseas combat tours and his most recent tour of duty in Korea,” said Brooks. “He comes with a great reputation as a solid leader and I know the Army has chosen very, very well by assigning him to command this battalion.”
Brooks also remarked that Cannon would be missed.
“He increased individual readiness and equipment accountability to the best conditions I’ve seen during my time in command and frankly during my time at Third Army, and he built a family readiness program that sets the standard for all others to emulate. It’s one that is based on active caring,” he said. “We are all better for serving with you and under your leadership.”
Cannon, who is departing for his new assignment at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., said he will miss Third Army.
“I’m proud to have served at the last Special Troops Battalion commander and depart knowing this battalion and its history will always be first,” he said.
The ceremony also included a redesignation ceremony for the retirement of the Special Troops Battalion colors and the activation of the HHBN. The Headquarters Company redesignated to the Headquarters Support Company and the Headquarters and Headquarters Company redesignated to the Intelligence and Sustainment Company.
The re-designation also included the activation of the Operations Company.
