    Story by Sgt. Amanda Tucker

    82nd Airborne Division Sustainment Brigade

FORT BRAGG, N.C. - According to the Story of the Noncommissioned Officer Corps, The Backbone of the Army, Army NCOs, “helped Washington preserve the Continental Army at Valley Forge, stood with Winfield Scott at Chippewa, and directed Zachary Taylor’s guns at Palo Alto. They carried the nation’s colors at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, fought yellow fever in Cuba with Walter Reed, and led Pershing’s and Eisenhower’s legions into Germany. Whether helping local populations build a village in Southeast Asia or teaching young Iraqi soldiers to conduct operations, American NCOs are leading from the front and are some of our nation’s best ambassadors. Over time, through various changes in tactics and technology, Army NCOs have emerged as the Army’s small-unit leaders, trainers, and guardians of standards.”

The 82nd Sustainment Brigade celebrated the introduction of 43 Soldiers joining this corps with a NCO day, dedicated to welcoming and celebrating these newly promoted NCOs Dec. 14.

Command Sgt. Maj. Edward Bell, 82nd Sus. Bde. senior-enlisted adviser and Tarboro, N.C., native, started the day leading 82nd Sus. Bde. NCOs in a NCO esprit de corps three-mile run. “It’s a very important day,” said Bell. “Thank you for what you do. Let’s make sure today is a special day for the brigade.”

Senior-enlisted advisers from company, battalion and brigade levels met at the LSA Dining Facility East after the run. “We are getting to know one another and to know we have help in the other units and we can reach out to them.”

The 82nd Sus. Bde. conducted the NCO induction ceremony at Dahl Gym.

“It represents what NCOs mean to the military,” said 1st Sgt. Jody Allen, senior-enlisted adviser for 178th Signal Company, 82nd Special Troops Battalion, and Annapolis, Md., native. “It’s crossing them over from a soldier to recognizing they are leaders. They have to bring their A game.”

“It always feels good to see soldiers promoted and move into the NCO ranks, and it also feels good to know you helped them get there,” said 1st Sgt. Rebecca Gerber, senior-enlisted adviser for the 659th Maintenance Company, 264th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, and Orlando, Fla., native. “It’s almost like they are your children. You see them as soldiers and then you bring them up as NCOs and you get to watch them transition.”
