FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Most enlisted soldiers dream of one day reaching the top of the enlisted ranks and claiming the title of sergeant major.
One noncommissioned officer is determined to make that goal a reality, and has impressed her peers so much with her leadership abilities they jokingly refer to her as, “future sergeant major.”
That soldier is Sgt. Jvona Harrell, a 25-year-old wheeled vehicle mechanic and transportation movement coordinator, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 362nd Quartermaster Battalion, 207th Regional Support Group.
“Harrell is the type of soldier who always accomplishes the mission even under the most adverse conditions,” said Sergeant 1st Class Broderick Davis, detachment sergeant and native of Wolfin, N.C., HHD, 362nd Quartermaster Bn. “I truly believe she will be a sergeant major someday. I started referring to her as ‘future sergeant major’ about a year ago after I saw how she managed to get things done. She has the skills, the drive, the motivation and the ability to get there and I expect she will.”
Harrell’s quest to be a sergeant major in the Army began years ago in her hometown of Windsor, N.C. “When I was in middle school, my aunt was serving on active duty with the Army and she completed a combat tour in Iraq,” said Harrell. “I think spending time with her was the first time I started looking at the Army as my future.”
In 2005 Harrell graduated from Bertie High School, and two weeks later she found herself on Fort Jackson, S.C., getting her first taste of Army life during Basic Combat Training. “Basic training was definitely a great learning experience,” she said. “It helped me further realize this was what I really wanted to do.”
Harrell then went on to spend another eleven weeks on Fort Jackson attending her Military Occupational Specialty school; there she was trained as a wheeled vehicle mechanic.
Harrell now works full-time as a military technician repairing vehicles for the 362nd Quartermaster Bn., in Winterville, N.C. “I really enjoy my job. I face new challenges everyday and every one of them brings with it valuable knowledge and experience that I can build on and pass on to my soldiers.”
Just about everyone who works with Harrell seems to know she is a special type of soldier.
“She is an outstanding NCO and an excellent leader,” said Staff Sgt. Floyd Coples, a logistics supply specialist assigned to HHD, 362nd Quartermaster Bn. Coples has known Harrell for five years. “She is very mission focused and always does what is right for her soldiers. I think she is going to go far.”
Harrell seems focused on her career goal and doesn’t try to keep it a secret. “I know I am going to be a sergeant major someday,” said Harrell with a smile. “I am not leaving the Army without it.”
