KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Staff Sgt. Wendalynn Young, with Headquarters, Third Infantry Division, is currently serving a tour of duty at Regional Command-South, Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, as the public affairs broadcast journalist non-commissioned officer-in-charge. Young, a Richmond, Va., native arrived in theatre in August 2012.
“This deployment is wartime combat deployment, whereas my last deployment was a peacekeeping mission,” said Young.
This is Young’s second deployment, which includes a tour to Kosovo.
Her unit’s mission is to enable the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Afghan National Security Forces to conduct security operations and strengthen good governance to defeat the insurgency, retain and expand security in key terrain, ensure transition progress, and improve conditions for economic growth.
“After my father, grandfather and a host of uncles who have and currently serve, I wanted to follow in their footsteps,” said Young. “I take pride in wearing the uniform and serving my country. I joined to be a part of an elite organization that would give me the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Having worked as a personnel specialist, combat medic and public affairs specialist; I’m proud to say that I have.”
As we begin to celebrate Women’s History Month, which highlights the contributions of women to history, society and culture; Young had a few words of encouragement for women currently serving their country or those looking to serve.
“I would tell women currently serving and interested in joining not to fall into the cliché, this is not a man's world! We certainly make a difference in our military regardless of what job you do; whether behind or on the frontlines,” said Young.
When Young returns home she said she is looking forward to a day off, spending time with her family and eating good food.
