FORT CARSON, Colo. – Maj. Gen. Paul LaCamera, commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, assumed command from Maj. Gen. Joseph Anderson, during a ceremony at Founders’ Field, March 14.

Through the ceremonial passing of the division colors, LaCamera relieved Anderson, who will head to Fort Bragg, N.C., to temporarily serve as the special assistant to the commanding general, U.S. Army Forces Command.

Lt. Gen. Robert Brown, commanding general, I Corps, commended Anderson for the many accomplishments during his 16 months at Fort Carson.

“The division deployed more than 10 units … amazing job preparing those units and training them to go into harm’s way,” Brown said. “As I look at our distinguished community leaders and the green jackets, it’s just another example of all (the Andersons) have done for our soldiers and families.

“The overall successes of this division are truly remarkable, and they don’t happen by chance. They happen because of energetic, motivated, dedicated and inspired leaders who demand excellence in themselves and those around them,” said Brown. “Joe is that type of leader, and Joe, you should be proud of everything this division has accomplished.”

Anderson took command of the 4th Infantry Division Nov. 16, 2011, and said the division is now close to his heart.

“Congrats to all of you on your main accomplishments this past year, and good luck as you continue to move forward,” said Anderson. “I’d like to recognize the 4th Infantry Division soldiers standing on the field before you. You guys and gals look outstanding and truly represent those who have passed before you with pride and professionalism. … I respect your courage and the sacrifice you display each and every day. You are my heroes.”

After Anderson’s final address to the soldiers, families, friends and special guests of 4th ID and Fort Carson, the Fort Carson community welcomed LaCamera with open arms.

“We want to welcome in the new commander. You go from one great command team to another great command team, and (Paul and his wife, Theresa) are great role models for the whole Army,” said Brown. “Paul is an amazing leader. I’ve had the honor to serve with him in combat and watch him for 27 years - a proven combat leader. As the new commander of the 4th Infantry Division, there’s no doubt Paul will continue to usher in the next chapter in this division’s rich history.”

LaCamera said he was honored to be taking command of the division and hopes to continue to see great things from the unit.

“Thank you for attending today’s ceremony. Your presence honors both the great soldiers and airmen who stand before you, but also honors the Andersons' legacy, their hard work, dedication, commitment to excellence, service, and most importantly, their leadership,” said LaCamera, a native of Westwood, Mass. “After dinner last night, Theresa and I realized just how big the shoes are that we had to fill."

“To Joe and Beth, thank you for the outstanding transition, transparency, example and friendship. We wish you the best as you continue your service leading America’s sons and daughters,” LaCamera added.

As LaCamera wrapped up his speech, he expressed his eagerness to serve with his new unit, and his appreciation for the Fort Carson community.

“To the soldiers, airmen, civilians, families of the Ivy Division and Mountain Post … thanks for your service, sacrifice and leadership,” said LaCamera. “My family and I are very excited to be joining your task force, and look forward to serving with you during the upcoming opportunities we will face.”
