WARRIOR BASE, South Korea – The future of the Army is here today. The Command Post of the Future is a battlefield tracking program which allows Army officials to control and command operations in theater.

The multifaceted system, also known as CPOF and pronounced “see-poff,” is used to pinpoint troop movements, both friendly and enemy, as they travel through their environments in real time, or in simulation.

The main goal is to provide the mission commander with the proper representation of precisely what is going on with each mission and how it relates to the bigger operational picture. By providing accurate up-to-the-minute information, CPOF becomes a powerful decision-making tool.

“It is the future,” said Sgt. 1st Class Gary Desormier, the Eighth Army G33 battle noncommissioned officer. “The ability to provide a commander with a common operational picture to get an accurate portrayal of what’s going on in his battle space is extremely beneficial. CPOF does a wonderful job of providing that to the Army.”

Data funnels directly from the field of battle into a joint or combined operations center. It is then disseminated to the proper channels, where each directorate within a command reports their information and how it translates to the overall picture.

Each directorate then takes the collective data and creates a larger portrait of the current scene of operations to brief the commander.

Ground troops can use Blue Force Tracker systems to link up to CPOF to provide up-to-the-minute information on their force movements. CPOF can also be employed on its own to track movements directly as a component of the Army Battle-space Command System.

These elements allow commanders to adjust fire and logistics to redirect and reinforce troops as needed, Desormier said.

CPOF operators within the command center are able to individually control their responsibilities within the common operational picture, or COP, to lay out the front-line scene according to their incoming information.

Operators have a database of Army unit capabilities, each with individual icons and operational symbols, they can drag and drop into the battlefield to plan for future operations or update current intelligence.

One of the major training exercises to utilize CPOF is operation Key Resolve. The regularly-scheduled, annual exercise combines tens of thousands of Korean and American troops to work together demonstrating the commitment between the Republic of Korea and the United States.

CPOF is currently in use in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and was also used during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
