MilFORT HOOD, Texas — Military Police SWAT team, a Special Reaction Team of the 178th Military Police Detachment, 89th MP Brigade, swarms a house on-post for a new real-life tactical training scenario March 5.
They coordinated with the Fort Hood Housing Office to use government quarters scheduled for demolition, said Capt. Lamont Brooks, SRT commander. Additionally, the Fort Hood Police notified the residents in the neighborhood to maintain peace and order.
The collaboration of resources allowed the SRT to conduct tactical training for realistic situations, said Brooks. The team raided the house to detain a suspect using simulation rounds and a mock objective.
“It gives the team knowledge of how houses are designed on post,” said Brooks. “These are the actual houses they will respond to.”
While the team is required to train a mandatory of 40 hours per month, they are not always granted such an all inclusive training aid.
Usually the SRT will train at abandoned military buildings and the Warrior Skills Training Center here utilizing the “shoot house,” simulating an actual residence, said Brooks. They also conduct weapon proficiency training at the MP shooting range. Additionally, the unit expects a supplemental 20-hours of training per month from their SRT soldiers.
Consolidated training is conducted on occasion with other law enforcement professionals such as the Dallas and FBI SWAT teams, Texas Rangers SRT and local police departments, Brooks said. It is very beneficial receiving classes and information from professionals whom are using and testing these tactics regularly.
In additional to all their current training requirements and strategies, this new method gives the SRT an opportunity to train in the most effective way possible.
