2nd Battalion, 18th Field Artillery Regiment

CAMP REDLEG, United Arab Emirates - The 2nd Battalion, 18th Field Artillery Regiment named Spc. Michael Miller as their battalion hero of the week, Feb. 26, 2013.

Miller, a native of Ava, Mo. and an allied trade specialist for the 69th Forward Support Company, has been vital to the day to day life of every soldier on Camp Redleg. He played a part in the construction and setting up of every tent, structure, or project on the base.

From the new pull up bars outside of the dining facility to the new parking spots in the motor pool, Miller had a hand in it. It’s hard to know that judging from his demeanor. Miller goes about his business never boasting about his accomplishments. He just worries about getting the job done.

Not only that, but he ventures out of his way to help others, “[I’ve] helped the Australians a lot with their own projects,” said Spc. Miller.

His leadership rave about his dedication and hard working mentality, “He’s probably the most skilled allied trade mechanic we have, his skills are valuable to our mission,” said 1st Lt. James Lavender, the maintenance control officer for 2-18th FAR and a native of Columbia, S.C.

Further emphasizing Miller’s versatility, 1st Lt. Lavender added, “He’s helped repair everything from vehicles to force protection gear, [he’s] a great asset to the unit.”

Miller’s recent accomplishments include cracking a locked safe that weighs a few hundred pounds using a plasma cutter to work through the locking bars. This only scratches the surface of what Miller is capable of. He has welded ever since high school, where he found an interest in the craft. Miller refined his welding abilities in the civilian sector before he joined the Army. He worked on large steel structures all across the United States.

“I was dangling from a hoist, a hundred feet in the air,” said Miller of the tasks he had to perform in his previous job.

As focused as Miller is on the mission at Camp Redleg, he looks forward to getting home to his wife, McKale Miller, and his son, Lane Miller at Fort Sill, Okla.
