YOKOSUKA, Japan – Culinary Specialist 1st Class Deforest L. Pittman assigned to Unaccompanied Housing (UH) onboard Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka has been awarded the Navy Outstanding Mid-Level Housing Manager Award for 2012, March 5.
The award comes from the Professional Housing Management Association (PHMA) and recognizes individuals and teams that contribute towards better quality housing for military members and their families. Commander, FLEACT, Yokosuka Capt. David Owen presented Pittman with his award.
“It’s a big organization within the Navy, military, and worldwide,” Pittman said. “I’ve received 12 certifications that helps me manage my tools and helps me do my job better,” said Pittman. “This award means that CFAY has the best of the best [in bachelor housing] for a base of our size in the Navy. We provide the best services.”
UH’s Director Lito F. Galgana Jr. said, “He’s a go-getter. He’s well versed in his job, and he’s very resourceful. He’s my top performer among the blue shirts.”
Pittman said the training he and his staff received from the PHMA allowed UH to better serve more than 3,700 sailors.
“It gives us a chance to give our sailors the best quality of life in their [quarters],” said Pittman. “I’ve spent 14.5 years on three [aircraft] carriers and a LPD [amphibious transport dock], so I know how it is being on a ship. [Sailors] want a nice place to lay their heads, when the ship pulls into port.”
UH services all of FLEACT, Yokosuka’s unaccompanied and single service members whether they are assigned to shore or sea duties.
Pittman said UH manages the Homeport Ashore program, a Chief of Naval Operations initiative to assign barracks rooms to unaccompanied and single service members. Under that initiative, UH just completed one project and is nearing completion on another.
