MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Families and friends literally took a mud bath as they went through the Marine Corps Community Services 5k Mud Run March 16 aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
More than 300 people finished the five mile intense, stomach turning race course designed by MCCS and built by Marines from Marine Corps Engineer School.
Multiple groups of teams competed in categories such as husband and wife, mixed, all men and all women.
This race had the most mud out of the past several races MCCS held, said Mike Marion, Camp Johnson Fitness Center manager.
“I think we had plenty of mud out there,” said Marion. “I think our runners today were surprised at the amount of mud that we actually had. It’s more mud than we’ve had in any other course.”
Like Marion said, runners of the event did say they were amazingly surprised at how much mud was incorporated into the course. They thought it would just be a couple of steep mud holes here and there, but some of the mud pits required a rope to pull the runners through.
In addition to the mud, there were several large barriers to jump over and crawl under. Also in the course was a mile devoted to a sandy, twisting, slightly hilly trail.
A few runners were annoyed by the constant pools of mud, but still enjoyed it and had a good time. One of the participants even declared it a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Marion said he wouldn’t change anything about this course because it went so smoothly thanks to the staff and supporters.
“The outcome was very good. There was a lot of participation, and we got a lot of positive remarks,” said Marion. “It’s just a good way to come out and spend a Saturday morning.”
