    28th Public Affairs Detachment

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III visited soldiers in Kuwait and Afghanistan March 25-28 to personally address their questions and concerns about the Army budget, changes to Army regulations and soldier resiliency.

“Resilience is the mental, physical, emotional and behavioral ability to face and cope with adversity, adapt to change, recover, learn and grow from setbacks,” said Chandler. “The Army is committed to increasing the resilience of its people.”

The Army recently started its Ready and Resilient Campaign (R2C) to synchronize multiple existing Army programs. Some of the major programs being focused on by R2C are the Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness Program, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program, the Army's suicide prevention efforts, the Integrated Disability Evaluation System, transition programs and the Wounded Warrior care programs.

“R2C is an approach to taking care of our people and honoring their service,” said Chandler. “It focuses on improving the overall fitness and resilience of soldiers, Army civilians and families. It ensures our Army remains ready and maintains the support of the nation we serve.”

During his time in theater, Chandler told soldiers his story about dealing with post traumatic stress disorder and how the Army’s behavior health system helped him through his ordeal and encouraged soldiers to use the programs the Army has to offer.

“When I was interviewed for sergeant major of the Army by General Casey he asked me ‘Is there anything I need to know that might look bad on the Army?’ and the only thing I could think of was having been seen by behavioral health and General Casey told me ‘That’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength,” said Chandler.

To finish out his trip, Chandler had dinner at the Camp Arifjan, Kuwait Zone 2 dining facility with some of the senior noncommissioned officers stationed on the camp to discuss their concerns about today’s changing Army and to hear their opinions about the things to come.
