PANCHKAL, Nepal - A platoon from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force gains knowledge about tactical procedures for reacting to real-world peacekeeping scenarios during Shanti Prayas-2, Global Peace Operations Initiative peacekeeping exercise.

For a platoon from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, participating in a multinational peacekeeping exercise involving platoons from 11 nations during Shanti Prayas-2, at the Birendra Peace Operations Training Center, is a chance to learn something new from a different type of training than they are used to.

Participants at the Field Training Exercise are gaining knowledge about tactical procedures for reacting to real-world peacekeeping scenarios.

2nd Lt. Okawa Hitoshi, platoon leader, said this is one of Japan’s first United Nations peacekeeping training events and that he is learning how to be flexible because of the many different situations that can occur.

“By partaking in United Nations missions we can show the world Japan has a presence,” Hitoshi said.

Hitoshi, who praised the leadership of the Nepalese Army, is enjoying his adventure and said working with other countries is one his favorite parts.

“We are learning from the experience of others and building unified understanding so different nations can work together for the protection of civilians,” said Hitoshi.

Sgt. Maj. Yasuhiko Kaneko says the training is a great chance for his young soldiers to learn something new with realistic training.

“They have to make quick decisions and squad leaders have to delegate when there are a lot of things going on,” Kaneko said.

“In Japan our training is different, and I would like to see them do a mission someday,” said Kaneko. “They have to share knowledge and experience here and make the most of what we are learning.”

Kaneko added that he is proud of his soldiers because they have been professionals.

“This is a great opportunity for Japanese people to get training overseas and they are learning a lot from the beautiful country of Nepal,” Kaneko said.
