CHICAGO — An enlisted member of Coast Guard Station Michigan City was recognized on the field during the third inning of the Chicago White Sox baseball game last Friday evening in Chicago.
Petty Officer 2nd class John Murphy, of Wall, N.J., was recognized for being named Enlisted Person of the Year for 2012 at his station, located in Michigan City, Ind., where he’s been serving for the past two years.
Murphy earned his recognition for outstanding performance as search and rescue boat operator and a maritime law enforcement officer. He is also an assistant training petty officer and a rescue and survival petty officer.
He played a crucial role in the preparation of the Rescue & Survival and Training programs which helped garner the station a Sumner Kimball Award. The award recognizes excellence in operational readiness and vessel condition. It is awarded by Coast Guard Headquarters’ Office of Boat Forces after a thorough inspection of Coast Guard units to crews who meet exceptionally high standards of the service. Only about 10 percent of the Coast Guard’s 191 small boat stations nationwide receive the award in any given year.
Murphy joined the Coast Guard in 2006. After attending boot camp in Cape May, N.J., he spent five years at Coast Guard Station Brant Point, located in Nantucket, Mass. Later this year, he will be transferring to the Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau, homeported in Honolulu, Hawaii.
