QUANTICO, Va. - The Quantico Children, Youth and Teen Program is beginning an after-school program. Every Tuesday and Thursday the program will be held at Quantico Middle/High School from 2:15 - 3 p.m. The program is open to all sixth to 12th grade students who live on base.
The creators of this program hope to offer the teenagers of Quantico a place to find fun and explore their future job and college opportunities.
“We need to support each other as a community,” said Samantha McNair, assistant director at the Youth and Teen Center. “We want to give the teens a safe place to develop (their interests).”
Working with the base middle/high school, McNair developed a plan that would fill a gap in the current system.
“There are no after-school programs on Tuesdays or Thursdays,” said McNair. “The school closes at 2:15 and sports programs begin at 3 p.m. The teens didn’t have a place to go.”
The CYPT then came up with a free program that provides homework help from certified teachers; programs that promote growth in: health, fitness, leadership and college readiness; transportation home and much more.
“Other schools would fight for this type of program,” said Michael Johnson, principal of Quantico Middle/High School. “We want to support this relationship for a long time. It helps the kids grow in a great manner.”
The CYTP found another way to make this program beneficial to the students and their families: running this program at the school.
There isn’t a place for the teenagers of our community to go for these types of programs, said McNair. “So we are taking it to them,” she said.
The program started April 9, 2013, and is scheduled to run for at least two months. The CYTP hopes to offer this program along with their other summer programs.
Currently registration is free and interested teens are encouraged to visit.
