GULF OF ADEN – Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit completed a combat life saver course aboard the amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) April 12.
The course was offered to Marines from different squadrons as part of basic medical training.
“Today is the practical presentation portion of the course,” said Hospitalman Tyler Moore. “This tests the Marines ability to effectively demonstrate their education from the classroom and apply that knowledge in a real world scenario.”
The training took place over five days, during which the Marines learned tourniquet application, how to monitor a patients airway, assessment of injuries and bleeding control.
“The Marines were put in a situation with two casualties,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Bryce Hocker. “We assessed their abilities to quickly recognize the injuries of the patients, properly dress the wounds and move the patient to a safer location.”
Fifty-eight Marines volunteered for the CLS course and were broken into groups of four to be tested on the final day through live application. The Marines chosen for the program were not medically trained prior to this course, but upon completion are now capable of acting as first responders.
“I have really enjoyed this course,” said Lance Cpl. Daniel Rodriguez. “We have learned how to attend to injured personnel and help someone stay alive until a doctor arrives.”
Carter Hall is part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
