TARIN KOT, AFGHANISTAN - Members of the Royal Australian Air Force completed a dismounted ground defense area patrol in Tarin Kot, Afghanistan, March 31, 2013.

The Airfield Defense Guards security forces section, from the 1 and 2 Airfield Defense Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley, have been conducting ground defense patrols with support from 7th Royal Australian Regiment Task Group Combat Engineers since their arrival at Multinational Base Tarin Kot in November 2012.

Ground defense patrols are designed to protect valuable air power assets, infrastructures, and personnel from ground attacks.

“We conduct the patrol as part of our hardened posture around the base and to provide that depth in defense,” said Flying Officer Will Drewitt-Smith.

The ADG also use the patrol as a means to gain awareness about the local population near the base.

“A lot of locals came out and were interested about us being in the area,” said Leading Aircraftman Dylan Roberts. “People were willing to come out and talk to us - which was good to see - and we got a bit of local information, which is what we were after.”

There were approximately 40 local Afghans along the route, which was cleared by 7RAR Engineers prior to entering the area.

“We were able to interact with the Afghan civilians that were out on the patrol in close proximity of MNB-TK,” Drewitt-Smith said. “The ADGs put on a good face for security forces and also for coalition forces on and off base.”

The ADGs have been successful with their patrols in the past, and expect to conduct more before they leave. This will also include more dismounted patrols.

“All the lads worked really well,” Roberts said. “Everyone pulled their weight and did all the right things. This was a pretty long and successful patrol; and I think there will be plenty more to come in the future.”
