CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Soldiers within the 38th Sustainment Brigade received refresher course training for Combat Lifesaver at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, April 18, 2013.
Soldiers were given training in pertinent subjects of CLS and tested on their knowledge of the course material. Many topics were covered, such as MEDEVAC requests, litter team, tourniquet, nasopharyngeal and needle chest decompression techniques.
Brigade medic, Pfc. Travis Middleton, Beech Grove, Ind., said these topics are zeroed in on so soldiers can have muscle memory of techniques involved.
“There are certain things in combat that are the most preventable and for recertification we try to go over those things so that they are the most clear in the mind,” said Middleton.
Middleton said the training is also important for knowledge of how the tools physically work.
“You can know theoretically how to place a tourniquet, how and where to put an NPA or a NCD needle, but the hands-on portion is important because it shows them how to use the proper technique,” said Middleton.
Brigade intelligence soldier, Sgt. Jeremy Mackey, from Danville, Ind., said he enjoyed the training and found it relevant and informative.
“This training is invaluable,” said Mackey. “Any type of training you receive like this, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Refresher training like this definitely increases your knowledge and increases your confidence.”
