JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Marines aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River got their first chance to flaunt their Frisbee skills at the Ultimate Frisbee Jamboree, April 11.
Teams from Marine Aircraft Group 29, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 26, MALS-29, and the Joint Public Affairs Office participated in the jamboree.
Each team played three, 20-minute games. While the jamboree games will not reflect permanently on the overall season statistics, it gave each team a chance to see where they stand and what they need to improve on for the season.
One participant in the jamboree, Derek Ballard, an ordnance man from MALS-26, said he was excited to start the Ultimate Frisbee season.
“I think it’s pretty awesome,” Ballard said. “My personal goal is to win.”
Ballard also pointed out the physical benefits of participating.
“If you want to work on endurance, for a combat fitness test or something, it’s great,” he said.
MCAS New River Marines and Sailors are invited to participate in the upcoming Ultimate Frisbee season, no matter their level of experience with the game.
“I’m horrible at the game,” said Jarrod Highsmith, an avionics technician with MAG-29. “But I’m great at encouraging people. I think it builds morale.”
The official season began April 16. Two games per week will be held, and the season will last a total of nine weeks. At the end of the nine weeks, the team with the most wins will be awarded the MCAS New River Ultimate Frisbee title.
There are currently four teams signed up for the regular season, but there’s still time for others to join in the friendly competition.
“Teams can join as late as eight weeks into the season,” said Martin Egnash, the JPAO Ultimate Frisbee team coach.
“I had a lot of fun playing in the jamboree,” Egnash said. “I think it’d be even more fun if more teams would join.”
