EDINBURGH, Ind. - More than 45 military operators and training planners were given a look at current capabilities and resources available at Atterbury-Muscatatuck near Edinburgh, Ind., during the first ever Atterbury-Muscatatuck Regional Collective Training Synch Meeting, May 1-2.

Attendees were divided into two groups. While one group toured the Training Aids, Devices, Simulators and Simulations facility housing many of Atterbury’s simulated training components, the other group toured a building in the Joint Simulation Training Exercise Center, filled with displays showcasing the live, virtual and constructive training environments available.

What would normally take the better part of two days to showcase was condensed to a period of four to six hours, said Capt. Devin McClarnon, project officer for the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Simulations at Atterbury-Muscatatuck.

When planning for the meeting began, the range teams came together to create a scale model and informational display for each range, allowing the planners to view the ranges without having to travel to each one; a task that usually takes around eight hours.

A subject matter expert or member of the range team was present at each display to discuss possible training scenarios, walk them through the layout of the model and answer any questions interested parties might have had.

Everything they would use on the field during training was on display in some way. There are so many properties at Atterbury, and if someone doesn’t know how to integrate them, they’re missing out, said McClarnon.

“The whole point is to tell our customers the best way Atterbury can support you to meet your commander’s intent.”

Defense contractors and vendors were also present, providing a look at interactive training platforms such as a small-scale shoot house setup inside the JSTEC, allowing attendees to shoot training ammo.

The TADSS tour allowed planners the use of simulators, such as the newly installed Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer, to see firsthand the training that Atterbury can provide.

The second day of the meeting focused on the urban specific training capabilities of Muscatatuck, a range of Atterbury in Butlerville, Ind., and included a tour of the facility.

Providing the highest payoff in the shortest amount of time was the goal of the event, said McClarnon, because many of the planners don’t have the time it takes to do a complete downrange tour of all the ranges and facilities when you factor in travel and the time it takes to disseminate the information.

McClarnon estimates that people came from at least five or six nearby states to attend the event, and would consider it a successful endeavor because of the interest many attendees expressed in beginning the scheduling process.

The DPTMS plans to hold the conference again, hopefully once every six months or at least once a year.
