FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Sgt. Rose Brown, an avid bowler and Paratrooper assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, is no stranger to competition. Before she joined the Army, she was a member of Team USA’s bowling squad and bowled competitively in international events.
Her passion for bowling began at the age of four, and this passion coupled with her competitive spirit, helped her achieve top honors in the female category at this year’s Armed Forces Bowling Championships, held April 23 to 26 at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Brown took home the top prize at this same event back in 2010, winning the overall competition but losing the singles event by one pin. This time was a different story though, as she won not only the overall competition, but also the singles event and the mixed doubles portion.
“I was pretty confident in my ability to win, and I wasn’t going to let the singles event elude me once again,” said Brown, from Modesto, Calif., a military police officer assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 508th Special Troops Battalion, 4th BCT.
Brown’s team finished second in the overall female team category as well. Brown said she relished the opportunity to be a key part of the team’s overall success.
“It was a great experience to come out on top but at the same time, it was great having the team cohesion that we had,” said Brown. “The All-Army bowling team came together as one. Even though many of us had never met before this past week, we all supported each other and helped each other out. That says a lot about everyone on the team.”
Following her success in 2010, the team once again sought Brown’s services the following year. Brown decided to answer her nation’s call instead, deploying to Afghanistan where she worked side by side with Afghan National Police and the brigade’s female engagement teams in Regional Command South.
Brown says the skills she has acquired as a Paratrooper have helped her to achieve continuing success as a bowler.
“As a Paratrooper, you learn how to overcome obstacles, remain disciplined and maintain your composure,” said Brown. “During the competition, I didn’t allow myself get down if I made a mistake or if I didn’t bowl to the best of my ability. I was able to stay focused and continue with the task at hand, which was to come out on top in the end.”
Staff Sgt. Christopher Medlin, from Fayetteville, N.C., said that Brown’s passion for bowling is only equaled by her competency as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division.
“She has a level of determination and competitiveness that you don’t see too often,” said Medlin, who was Brown’s platoon sergeant for the last three years and who is also assigned to the 508th STB.
“I can count on her to complete any task and have it done right the first time,” he added. He said that Brown’s “drawn out” conversations about bowling are frequent and that she also takes pride in her service to the country. “Simply put, she loves to bowl and she loves being a Paratrooper,” he added.
Brown said she will have many fond memories of the competition, and that being part of it made her a better bowler and also a better person.
“It was a life-changing experience to say the least,” she said.
