KUNDUZ, Afghanistan- Cavalrymen from the 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment officially assumed authority to conduct missions in the Kunduz province of Afghanistan from the Fort Stewart based 3rd Sqdn., 7th Cav. Regt., during a transfer of authority ceremony, May 18.
The ceremony marks the third deployment 6th Sqdn. 4th Cav. Regt., has had in six years to Afghanistan, with soldiers having anywhere between one to five deployments.
“Regardless of number, they stand ready to do their duty and we are committed to building upon the relationships with our Afghan friends and coalition partners,” enforced Lt.Col. Michael Zernickow, commander of 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry.
During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Zernickow, commander 6th Sqdn. 4th Cav. Regt., explained the importance of the units’ colors.
“It is said that the very soul of a unit is symbolized in the colors under which it fights - 51 battle streamers affixed to our colors, they record the glories of the past, stand guardian over the present, and provide inspiration for the unit’s future,” said Zernickow “Today it formally recognizes the Squadrons deployment to Afghanistan and a member of the Regional Command-North Team.”
The 6th Sqdn. 4th Cav. Regt., 3rd Brigade Combat Team, will spend the next nine months working as International Security Assistance Forces alongside NATO partners across four provinces in Regional Command North- a mission the unit has trained months for.
As soon as they returned in January 2012, from their last deployment, the Squadron began preparing for its’ next.
The 6th Sqdn. 4th Cav. Regt., began training at the individual level with weapons familiarization and qualification and progressed through multi-echelon scenario driven training events at the platoon and troop level.
During the intense nine month training phase, the soldiers of 6th Sqdn., fired over one million rounds of ammunition. The squadron’s training culminated with a successful mission readiness exercise at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Fort Polk, La., in February.
With their experience, their training, and the support of their families and communities, the soldiers of 6th Squadron are well prepared to execute their assigned mission.
