JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska - Approximately 40 soldiers and airmen with the Alaska National Guard gathered at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson to compete in the Alaska National Guard’s 2013 Adjutant General’s Match, May 17-19.
The Alaska National Guard 2013 TAG Match is an annual event offering Alaska Guardsmen an opportunity to test their marksmanship skills and weapons systems in a battle-focused environment.
“The 2013 Alaska National Guard TAG Match represents an opportunity for the finest marksmen in the Alaska National Guard to get together every year and compete for a place on the state marksmanship team,” said Capt. Karl Bruening, Alaska National Guard 2013 TAG Match officer in charge.
“It’s also a chance for those essential military skills to be passed down to up-and-coming Guardsmen looking to improve far beyond just meeting the minimum qualification standards,” Bruening said.
Four-man teams and individual competitors completed advanced marksmanship tasks with a wide variety of weapons including the M9 pistol, M240B machine gun and the M16 rifle.
After performing under pressure at the highest levels of marksmanship, the competitors were recognized during an awards ceremony held at the Alaska National Guard armory on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
Bruening opened the ceremony by thanking all of the participants in the competition and those who made the event a success.
“To all the shooters, to all the range personnel, and to all those who worked behind the scenes to make this happen, know that you have our gratitude,” Bruening said.
Sgt. 1st Class Paul D. Kerr, Alaska National Guard 2013 TAG Match noncommissioned officer in charge, Alaska Army National Guard, announced the top two teams who competed across all course of fire.
The first place overall team score went to the 213th Space Warning Squadron of the Alaska Air National Guard, and the second place overall team score went to the 49th Ground Missile Defense Battalion, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery of the Alaska Army National Guard.
“Congratulations to the members of these teams for excelling in competition and teamwork,” Kerr said. “Keep up the good work and keep practicing for next year because I know your competitors will be doing the same.”
Ten individuals with the top scores across all courses of fire were selected to join the State Marksmanship Team and awarded the Alaska Adjutant General Marksmanship Proficiency Award.
Master Sgt. Nicolas Blace, 213th Space Warning Squadron, Alaska Air National Guard, took first place on the team with an overall individual score of 487 out of 600.
“Participating in this competition promotes marksmanship and fulfills our mission,” Blace said. “This was a great event that got everyone motivated to go above and beyond the minimum standard.”
Team members are slated to participate in the Winston P. Wilson and MAC Region 6 Competition.
