FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, Staff Sgt. Leona Flinn, 1st Theater Sustainment Command, G3 schools noncommissioned officer in charge, and Capt. Javier Rivera, 1st TSC, deputy G2, lead their team in various training activities to prepare Team Black Jack for the upcoming Fort Bragg Army Birthday 10-miler, June 6.
Flinn organized the training from a compilation of sources on long-distance running to help the team prepare for the event in a month’s time frame.
Long-distance running is nothing new for Rivera and Flinn, both have participated in many Army 10-milers and various other runs and marathons throughout their Army careers.
Team Black Jack, named after the 1st TSC mascot, is comprised of 16 runners. The team members experience ranges from first time long-distance runners to well-experienced runners.
“This is the first long-distance run I have ever done,” said Pfc. Faustino Diaz, human resources specialist, postal division, 14th Human Resources Support Command, 1st TSC.
Diaz, having never ran more than four miles during company runs, joined Team Black Jack to not only challenge and motivate himself, but others around him and represent his unit.
This is the 17th Annual Fort Bragg Army Birthday 10-miler with an average of 20,000 soldiers, family members, retirees and civilians participating in the event. In conjunction with the 10-miler, the eighth annual Army Birthday four-mile walk for fun will also take place, this event is non-competitive. The run will begin on Longstreet Road in front of Sports USA.
“All it takes is that first step,” said Rivera. “Eventually, you will reach your goal.”
