FORT BLISS, TEXAS -- The first elements of the New York Army National Guard's 101st Expeditionary Signal Battalion returned to the United States June 1-2 for demobilization and redeployment.
The nearly 90 soldiers of the Hudson-Valley based New York Army National Guard unit is the advance element of the battalion. The Soldiers will demobilize at Fort Bliss before returning to New York next week.
The balance of the unit's 360 remaining soldiers will return from overseas in the coming three weeks for demobilization throughout the month of June.
Most of the soldiers will return to their hometowns on single-ticket flights using commercial airlines and be met by their families privately.
The soldiers left New York in August 2012 to train for their overseas deployment. The 101st Signal Battalion deployed to Afghanistan in September 2012 and provided communications support to American and coalition forces in that country.
The battalion, which trains at armories in Yonkers, Peekskill and Orangeburg, provides theater-wide satellite communications support using the Army's state-of-the-art Warfighter Information Network-Tactical.
