BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Two Combined Joint Task Force-82 Soldiers were awarded the Purple Heart June 4 and 6.
Army Sgt. Kaleef Hickson and Spc. Lisa Kelly from Company A, 202nd Military Intelligence Battalion, were each awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat while conducting human intelligence operations in support of Combined Joint Task Force-82.
Kelly, a native of Smithville, Ohio, was injured June 1 by an improvised explosive device when she accompanied an explosive ordnance disposal team in response to a report of a potential IED in the Mehtar Lam region.
Three days later, Hickson, a native of Bronx, New York, was also injured by an IED while serving as a security element for a team conducting human intelligence operations in the vicinity of Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Army Maj. Gen. David Rodriguez, CJTF-82 commanding general, presented Kelly her Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge for her dedicated service and commitment to mission in the face of danger. The 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade commander, Army Col. Kelly Thomas, presented Hickson a Purple Heart.
Both Hickson and Kelly are in good spirits and were transported out of Afghanistan for surgery and physical therapy.
