MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - There was plenty to do this Memorial Day weekend from restaurants to amusement parks. Yet the highlight of the weekend aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico had to be the Town of Quantico’s 2013 Summer Music Concert Series at the town's Municipal Park on May 25.
In March, a special town council meeting was called to discuss what events and activities the town intended to host this summer. During that meeting a number of ideas were discussed and one of them was the 2013 Summer Music Concert Series.
“With the recent improvements to the town's Municipal Park and its location on the Potomac River, the council agreed a concert series seemed like a great idea,” said Kevin Brown, Mayor, Town of Quantico.
The Sasparilla Band was the musical attraction for this event. They played mostly old school music dating back to the 60s, 70s, 80s’ and 90s. Residents who attended the event with their family and friends weren’t disappointed as the genres of music that was played covered country, rock and even hip-hop.
“I don’t usually come out to Q-Town too often unless I need something to snack on,” said Lance Cpl. Chong Lor, supply clerk, Headquarters Company. “I saw a post about the event on the base Facebook page and thought, why not? Now, I’m glad did come out. The band is awesome, I got a chance to meet the mayor and just relax by the water on a great sunny day.”
There will be two other concerts scheduled to be held at the park later this year. The Koolerators, a blues, rock and country band, will play June 22. The School Street Ramblers, a bluegrass group, will play July 20.
The mayor is taking a crawl, walk, run approach for the Summer Music Concert Series. For the first concert, there was only music provided. He hopes to sell food and alcohol starting with the June 22 event as well as pairing the concerts with other activities such as a horseshoe or bocce ball tournament.
The Town of Quantico is actively working to provide a number of inexpensive family friendly activities this summer. In addition to the Summer Music Concert Series, the town will host a Father's Day canoe/kayak event, horseshoe, bocce ball and fishing tournaments, as well as a 4th of July community cookout. They also intend to build on the success of last year's one-day basketball tournament by expanding the number of teams and making it a multi-day event this summer. All of these events will be open to base residents and employees.
“When people are planning their weekends, I want Quantico to be an option and I believe focusing on special events is one way to make that happen,” Brown said. “If anyone has any questions or comments about an upcoming event or suggestions for something that can be added they can contact me at mayor@townofqantico.org or 571-334-3432.”
