AT SEA - Capt. Gregory C. Huffman relieved Capt. Putnam H Browne as commanding officer of amphibious dock landing ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20), during an underway change of command ceremony June 10, 2013.

Commander, Expeditinary Strike Group 3, Rear Adm. Gerard P. Hueber was the guest speaker.

Under Browne’s command, Green Bay completed a challenging planned maintenance availability to meet an accelerated work up schedule and eight month deployment steaming more than 50,000 nautical miles in support of exercises Iron Magic, Red Reef, and Leading Edge with various Gulf nations.

Browne was recognized for his service as commanding officer with the Legion of Merit.

“No organization or individual leader succeeds by their actions alone. The larger the organization or the individual’s scope of responsibility the larger the supporting cast,” Browne said. “This ship’s success and subsequently the success’ shared by me have come at the efforts of many people and organizations.”

Huffman’s past assignments include Sunliners of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 81, Royal Maces of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 27, Screaming Eagles of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA)122, and Naval Personnel Command, Millington, Tenn.

Huffman previous completed a tour as executive officer of the USS Enterprise in March, 2011. During this tour he completed two combat deployments, including Big E’s 25th and final deployment.

“Green Bay team congrats on your deployment you should really be proud of what you’ve done. Now, let’s shift our focus to something different. We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Huffman said. “I know this team will rise to the occasion and continue the history of success of this proud war ship.”
