BANGAR, Brunei Darussalam – Medical personnel from the People’s Liberation Army and Singapore Armed Forces work together treating simulated casualties and local community members at the Level 2 hospital site in Bangar, Brunei Darussalam, June 19 during the Association of Southeast Nations Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief and Military Medicine Exercise hosted by Brunei.
Along with performing the expected tasks, the Level 2 site also showcased the combined capabilities of the field hospital for multinational delegates from the ASEAN-Plus 8 nations—further demonstrating the potential to provide aid and relief through cooperation and the uniting of forces.
“As being the first time, there is a lot to learn dealing with other nations (standard operating procedures) on handling medical situations,” said Royal Brunei Army Col. Baharin, the lead medical officer for the Incident Coordination Centre. “About 80 percent of the nations are satisfied with the SOP so far, and we are working out the problems.”
The U.S. medical team has been interacting with the other nations and observing how care is provided to the simulated casualties.
“So far, this exercise has been very positive and new found knowledge and respect has come from working together,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Cdr. Michael Termini, a preventive medicine physician and lead medical officer for U.S. Pacific Fleet. “Building rapport and having a common understanding during this launching point will only bring a more positive outcome in the future.”
More than 2,500 multinational personnel from 18 Asia-Pacific nations are participated in the ASEAN exercise, which provides a platform for regional partner nations to address shared security challenges, strengthen defense cooperation, enhance interoperability and promote stability in the region.
ASEAN is comprised of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Non-ASEAN countries include Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia and the U.S.
