Nahr-e Saraj district leadership assume responsibility for securing Zombalay, Mirmandab
HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Nahr-e Saraj district leadership met at the district center to sign a contract allowing them to assume complete control of security in the upper Gereshk valley in Helmand province, June 19.
The Nahr-e Saraj district leadership who signed the contract that transferred the final Coalition base on the east side of the Helmand River included district chief of police, Capt. Saymand Hekmatullah, district governor Mohammed Fahim and National Directorate of Security Dr. Haji Abdul Wali.
Occupying the base will allow the leadership to support the Zombalay and Mirmandab’s Afghan Local Police, the first line of defense between the Taliban and Gereshk.
Afghan Local Police complement counterinsurgency efforts by assisting and supporting rural areas with limited Afghan National Security Forces presence, enabling conditions for improved security, governance, and development.
“All of the people want security. The insurgent forces are learning that they cannot win this fight and are losing ground,” said Hekmatullah. “It is important that we maintain security in Gereshk valley to provide its people with peace and stability.”
By assuming full control of the military base, the district leadership demonstrated their commitment and determination to prevent Taliban influence throughout Nahr-e Saraj.
With coalition forces transitioning to a complementary role, Afghan security forces are providing stability and security unilaterally throughout the majority of the Nahr-e Saraj district. The district leadership attributed much of that success to Hekmatullah.
“It has become the responsibility for all Afghans to bring security to their country,” said Fahim during a meeting with Coalition forces earlier in the week. “We have a lot of faith in our forces and in Hekmatullah. He is a tough young commander.”
The Afghan-led national security effort of working towards taking complete control of security responsibility for their country is the ultimate symbol of Afghanistan sovereignty.
