FORT STEWART, Ga. - Thousands of 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers gathered just after sunrise, June 13, to watch their commanding general do the “Gangnam Style” dance.

The soldiers weren’t at a morning dance event, instead the division came to Cottrell Field to cerebrate the Army’s 238th birthday.
To kick off the cerebration, Brig. Gen John Hort, 3rd ID’s deputy commander-rear, led the gathered soldiers on a four-mile division run.

“Happy Birthday to everybody today; [the] Army’s birthday is today, let’s give a big round of applause to ourselves,” Hort said. “We’re 238 years old tomorrow, but I’m counting it for today. We have been in 187 campaigns in our lifetime. It’s a special day to remember those who have gone before us.”

Before the run, Hort called out the brigade’s youngest lieutenant, a 22-year-old lieutenant from 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

The general made a deal with the division. If the lieutenant could correctly answer two questions, he would do the now famous “Gangnam Style” dance.

If the lieutenant couldn’t answer the questions, he would have to do the dance. The lieutenant correctly answered one of the two questions, so the general asked the division formation who should do the dance. The division selected the general, so danced he did – to the laughter and enjoyment of the thousands in formation.

After the run, Hort and Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Pegues, the 3rd ID command sergeant major-rear, selected and cut the official 3rd ID’s Army Birthday cake, with help from the division’s youngest and oldest soldiers – 57-year-old Michael C. Tibbetts, from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Armor Brigade Combat Team, and 18-year-old Dylan Burgess, of 3rd Sustainment Brigade.

The cake was selected the best among five cakes, each sat in front of their brigade’s formation and were made by Soldiers from 1st ABCT, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4thIBCT, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade and 3rd SB.

The winning cake was made by Spc. Curtis Thomas and Sgt. Stephanie Randall, food service soldiers from Headquarter Support Company, 603rd Aviation Support Battalion, 3rd CAB.

After cutting the cake, Hort and Pegues presented Thomas and Randal with a trophy and medals.

Despite running four miles in the Georgia heat, one soldier felt it was worth the sweat.

“It was an outstanding run, the pace wasn’t too fast, it [the pace] kept where everybody could sound off, be motivated and enjoy what the run was meant for,” said 1st Sgt. Andrew Durant, first sergeant for 396th Transportation Company, 3rd SB. “I think [the run] is very critical to the tradition of the Army, so that younger soldiers can realize the importance of cerebrating the history and traditions of the Army.”
