BEAUFORT, S.C. - For more than a century, Navy corpsmen have provided treatment to wounded sailors and Marines around the world. From the land, air and sea, Marines are there with more than 26,000 reserve and active duty corpsmen.

The Navy’s Hospital Corps was founded on June 17, 1898, enabling the service to provide heath care support to sailors, Marines, families and retirees.

In celebration of this year’s 115th Hospital Corps anniversary, a Corpsman Birthday Ball was held by the Naval Hospital Beaufort, June 1.

Despite the birth of the Hospital Corps in 1898, a form of corpsman existed as Loblolly Boys. Their main responsibilities was to the prepare the nourishment for the sick, keep the operation area clean and provide traction through the use of sand and to assist the surgeon when needed.

Today, corpsmen are often designated as hospital corpsmen or field corpsmen. Hospital corpsmen generally work in military clinics and hospitals such as the branch medical clinic aboard Fightertown and Naval Hospital Beaufort. Their primary working uniform is the Navy’s digitized camouflage uniform.

Field corpsmen can be assigned to Marine operating forces and receive advanced emergency medicine training. They are also taught the fundamentals of Marine Corps life as well as physical conditioning, small arms training and basic battlefield tactics.

If a unit is deployed, conducting a field exercise or participating in a yearly swim qualification, a corpsman can be found.

General James Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, said, “Since 1898, hospital corpsmen have proudly stood by the side of Marines in ‘every clime and place.’ From hospitals and clinics at home to distant battlefields abroad, you have served our nation and the Marine Corps with the utmost courage, fidelity and professionalism.”
